[SHIVER!] If I’d known the kind of havoc a cookie could wreak, I would have put down that first Girl Scout Thin Mint. Every season I gobble ‘em up like they’re going out of style, and I rue the day the first one came out of the oven.

Today I can’t help but ask, “Has Urban Decay been talking to my muffin top?” I ask because I think their new Lip Junkie line of fall glosses ($19 each) smell EXACTLY like Thin Mint cookies (they also taste kinda like ‘em too).

Coincidence? I think not!

Urban Decay cooked up these 11 moisturizing non-sticky shades to plump lips over time. One week in and I can’t report Angelina Jolie lips yet (or any noticeable increase in lip plumpness, for that matter), but that may be too much to ask of a gloss.

The main reason I wanted to try these wasn’t large, luscious lips (although I intend to keep testing them). What I was really interested in were the colors. Of the ones I’ve tried, Crush (a creamy hot pink), Wallflower (a creamy neutral pink), Runaway (a shimmery coral) and Perversion (a shimmery dark berry) pack the most pigment.

All of the colors spark a slight cooling sensation, which I’ve found refreshing on hot days, and last about two hours on my lips before requiring another application.

The Golden Girls

You know your girl loves the brushes! If you’re going to spend any money on brushes this holiday season then bring your bad self to the MAC counter because they’ve got some really pretty — and surprisingly practical — gilded goodies. Ohh, la luxe!

For holiday 2007, MAC has a collection called Heirlooms, which features cute clutch bags and several different brush sets. By far my favorites are Heirlooms: 4 Face Brushes and Heirlooms 5: Basic Brushes. I love these sets because of the gold handles! And not only are they pretty to look at, but they’re surprisingly useful too.

What’s the deal with the “SE”?

The “SE” sets are different than the regular, full-price brushes you buy individually at MAC. SE handles are shorter and lighter. Although the SE brush heads are great, they aren’t as soft as my regular MAC brushes. I prefer longer-handled brushes that have weight to them, but I do like SE brushes for travel or for touch-ups, like after a gym workout. I think of them as my “occasional” brushes, rather than everyday “workhorse” brushes.

If you plan to buy these brushes, I’d recommend that you either be:

- a brush newbie who plans on building a collection of brushes, but needs a good starting off point
- a lovely lady on a strict brush budget
- a brush junkie who need a set of small handled brushes that will only be used for travel and on-the-go touchups, and not everyday use

The brush breakdown

With brushes, I really don’t believe in limiting a brush to a specific use – i.e., this brush is for the crease only, or this brush is for concealer only. I really like to mix and match my brushes according to the products that I’m using and how I’m feeling that day. Here’s a general breakdown of how I’d use the brushes in these sets.

Heirlooms: 4 Face Brushes ($48.00)

This set comes with the a cutie-pie clutch purse made from Chanel-esque gold tweed! To peep the brushes that come with this set, check the picture above and start from the left-hand side:

168 – Large angle contour brush. I’d use this for applying blush to the hollows of the cheek, to contour, or for specific placement of highlighting powder. In a pinch I’d wet this and use it as a foundation brush.
187 – Duo fibre brush. This is the famous MAC “skunk” brush, made from a blend of soft goat and synthetic fibers. The MAC Web site says that this is used for lightweight application and blending of face powder or pigments. I’d use this as a foundation brush, as a blush brush, as a highlight brush and as a blending brush.
194 – Concealer brush. I’d use this for undereye concealer and for layering powder shadow on top of soft kohl liners, like MAC Technakohl.
190 – Foundation brush. If you’ve used this brush before as a foundation brush and it works for you then I give you big props. I have this brush in the full-sized version, but can’t seem to get this to work on me. I always end up with patchy application. For foundations I actually like the 182 buffer brush! The price is an arm and a leg but it’s well worth it. The 190 is still a useful brush though, and would be good for getting foundation into places the 182 doesn’t go easily, like the corners of the nose. I’d also use this for creme blush.

The cold, hard math: If you purchased the full-sized version of these 4 brushes it would cost you $124.50.

Heirlooms: 5 Basic Brush Set ($45.00)

Check the cute, gold fake-snakeskin container this comes in. I love it ’cause it looks expensive. Plus, the brushes are useful, too! The five brushes that come with this set are in the pic above starting from the right hand side:

219 – Eye detail brush. This brush has a small brush head with fibers that are gathered into a pencil-shaped tip. I use it for shadow application right at the lash line, or precise application of color to the outer-v. I’ve tried to use it in the crease but have had just so-so results.
316 – Lip brush. In a pinch I’d also use this for fine spot concealing, or for applying gel liners like Fluidline.
266 – Brow brush. WOOT! You know you’re girl can’t live without her 266. I use this every day to apply Concrete shadow to my brows. I know some folks like to use the 266 to line the eyes with Fluidline, too.
129 – Powder/blush brush. In a pinch I’d also use this as a foundation brush.
239 – Eye shader brush. I love this brush. It’s great for both powder and emollient products (MAC Paint, concealers) and has so many uses. You can use it to apply shadow all over the lid, or in the crease, or to blend out harsh lines. Oh, and it can also teach you how to speak French! Okay, totally kidding about that last one. But still, it’s a fantastical, multi-use brush that I’m sure you’ll fall in love with.

The cold, hard math: If you purchased the full-sized version of these 5 brushes it would cost you $119.50.

Both sets give you brushes with a wide range of possibilities. But if you’re watching your budget and can only purchase one set I’d recommend:

- buying the 4 Basic Brush Set if you have a good working set of everyday go-to brushes
- buying the 5 Basic Brush Set if you’re new to brushes and need a good starting point

SSR La Rinascente has often hosted events during the Salone del Mobile of Milan. This year it looks as if you want to be more involved in the actual co-production of an event. How did this develop ?

TC: This is the first time laRinascente is totally in charge of a big event. Before we just had partnerships with the likes of Interni.This time we thought that the time was right, we were ready to be part of the excitement of the city during the Salone. We have a strong heritage of relationships with the Milanese designers starting with the 50s and 60s Compassodoro and we have worked in the past with big talents like Bruno Munari, Gio Ponti etc.

SSR: Why hack?

TC: We wanted to choose a concept which crosses art, design and technology and is part of the language of design today and could be understood by today��s design community. It is also a concept that is very of the moment for the artistic community in general. Transforming a reality into something else. It��s a tool. A way of being in a relationship with the creative process.

SSR: Why Beatrice Galilee?

TC: Because she is one of the coolest and most relevant young curators today. She has a great knowledge about today��s trends and design, not to mention she��s very well connected within the design community.

SSR It is a shared idea that the Salone del Mobile (and more generally design) is an open system, which endorses participation from the public �C whereas the fashion weeks are the very opposite: elitarian and selfcontained. Is the Hacked event meant to bridge/connect the two worlds �C fashion and design �Cboth very well represented at la Rinascente?

TC: No, not really. We wanted to do something really specific about the process of creating design. And we wanted to do something where people can really participate. We weren��t really thinking about working on a different scale, or creating a new relationship with fashion. That wasn��t the aim.

SSR: What does such an event mean for la Rinascente?

TC: We would like to become a place where these kinds of events, which are interesting on many different levels, take place. We want to be a platform for new designers and and to become an important place for the city where people can experiment and be creative. Milano doesn��t have this at the moment.

SSR As I read in the programme, Hacked is stressing the interaction with the public during the event. Is this just ��one shot�� or la Rinascente strategy is looking for more interaction and connectivity with its customers? If this is the case could you tell us how you plan to develop more interactions with your customeres?

TC: Of course, we would love to do something like this again, because in the end we want to open the creative process to the public, so they can understand better and understand the exciting things that young designers are doing. We don��t know how exactly yet, but we��ll definitely continue to host these kinds of events and become more and more relevant during the Salone for the interational community.

SSR How has the Milanese fashion system changed since you became fashion director and what in your view should be the role of la Rinascente in the new scenario?

TC: There��s definitely a different customer for fashion, because the markets are enormously open now. We have a world wide audience for fashion, which wasn��t the case even 5 years ago. So, the new markets have a great influence in how fashion is thought of and designed by designers themselves and so the language of fashion has changed, for sure. Chinese Coach outlet store online, Russians, people from the Middle East and Brazilians consume fashion in a different way. The fashion industry has, naturally, adjusted to their needs.

This change has been felt by laRinascente especially. Today 50% of our customers are tourists, many of whom are used to shopping in department stores, unlike the Milanese who are used to shopping in a much more inimate way, in small boutiques and with personal relationship with the owner and a very personalised service. For tourists, laRinascente is easy and familiiar.

Source4Style is the new venture of eco-friendly model and sustainability strategist Summer Rayne Oakes. An online marketplace for sustainable fabric to be launched in September, it will surely make significant waves in the sea of fabric sourcing. Filling the dearth of online eco-friendly sourcing options available to fashion designers, Source4Style allows both the seasoned eco-designer and those merely looking to dabble the ability to make socially and environmentally conscious decisions without the blink of an eye.

Oakes took the time to explain us how Source4Style works:

Once launched (anticipated for this September), designers or buyers will need to register to use the site, free of charge. There will be a small fee for suppliers. As a designer or buyer you are presented with several options when you log on to the site. The browse feature allows you to do just that: browse through the current and expanding collection of over 1,000 fabrics from over 25 suppliers; the best option if you have not yet honed exactly what you are looking to purchase. If you are entering the site with a particular fabric in mind, say an organic cotton from Turkey, Source4Style allows you to perform an advanced search specific to your needs. Queries can be narrowed based on fiber, country of origin, price, and weight. The Source4Style team is looking at expanding its query options to include certifications as well.

Each fabric, presented in both drape and flat formats, includes a detailed 300 dpi image, recreating the trade show experience online by allowing the buyer to ��feel�� the fabric��s texture through macro magnification. The ��Swatchbook�� feature is incredibly useful, similar in affect to Amazon��s ��wish list�� or for the library nerds out there, EndNote, creating a record of fabric of interest to the buyer. Within the Swatchbook you can add notes to fabrics for your future reference, purchase yardage Coach Outlet, and purchase a swatch. In an effort to show this piece’s versatility, below, I’ve styled this one dress in three completely different ways.

1. Simply Sweet

I chose very simple, pretty accessories for this outfit; these basic pieces will enhance the dress without stealing attention from it. A simple pair of metallic silver sandals, some cool silver studs and a pretty floral headband are the perfect match for this girly look.

2. Boho Casual

So often you see girls dressing very seductively (and not necessarily in a femme fatale way) to go to bars and clubs. Why not go classy instead? This outfit is totally put together, but adding the pumps still gives it a sexy vibe.

Outfit #2: Casual (and Fashionable) Friday

This outfit is perfect for a Casual Friday at work. (Depending on your work environment, this look may also be appropriate for the regular work week!) Nude toned shoes are one of my favorite trends right now, so these booties are definitely hot. The cocktail ring incorporates the nude color as well. The yellow blazer is outrageous and adds a huge burst of color to this outfit – it’ll brighten up a wintery day or make a spring day even happier. The striped shirt is a great, simple trend that spices up every outfit, and the Essie nail polish adds sophistication and fun.

Outfit #3: Model Off-Duty

To me, this outfit screams “street wear” and reminds me of something you’d see a model off-duty wearing on the streets of New York. It’s a bit grungy and relaxed (boyfriend button up and tank) yet still put together (black jeans and flats). I would definitely throw this on for class any day.

I love classic pieces such as trench coats and pearls. In my opinion, the coat, headband and pearls make this entire outfit on their own. The headband’s burst of color against the neutral/classic palette is so Blair-esque in my opinion! I used pearls in many of my outfits for this installment because they add such a feminine touch to any outfit and can totally pull together any look.

Outfit #5: Romance

If you follow our beauty posts, you probably already know about the hair and skincare benefits of jojoba oil, olive oil, and coconut oil, among others. A little while ago I stumbled across another oil from the Tahitian islands that’s popping up in beauty products everywhere: monoi oil.

A lot of brands have picked up on this phenomenon and have started incorporating this oil into hair products, lipsticks, foundations and more! So to get you up to speed on this trendy new ingredient, today, I’ll explain what monoi oil is, the benefits, its common uses, and where you can buy it.

What is Monoi Oil?

Fashion Inspiration: Walt Disney’s Tangled Part 2

After the great response our first post on fashion inspired by Walt Disney’s Tangled received, I’ve decided to extend the post to include inspiration from a few more of the characters in the newest Disney princess classic.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, Tangled follows the adventures of soon-to-be eighteen-year-old Rapunzel who, up until now, has been locked away in a tower by evil Mother Gothel. The story adds a new twist to the classic Rapunzel fairy tale and is sure to be yet another Disney movie favorite for all ages.

Below, I have created a series of looks inspired by some of the characters from Tangled: Pascal, Flynn Rider, Maximus, and Mother Gothel. Scroll down to view them all!

Pascal Outfit

Rapunzel’s loyal sidekick is an adorable little chameleon named Pascal, but don’t let his cuteness fool you Coach Factory Coupon! He’s known to be a little mischievous every now and then.

Wear this red, flowing dress with a pair of dark brown oxfords to capture a look inspired by her attire. Add a pair of jeweled earrings for a bit of sparkle, and slip on a long stone ring to finish off this outfit.
